A little over a year ago I received an email from Encore Electric (2nd largest electrical contractor in Colorado by some counts). I had never heard of them but they asked about our Electrical Technologies Program and wondered if they could come present to our students. I said sure and we set up a date. They came to Iowa Central last February and gave a presentation to our Electrical Technologies and Electro Mechanical students. After the presentation they had interviews and then hired 5 freshmen (Brady Codner, Lucas Fiala, Cam Mitchell, Jacob Schwenker, and Andrew Wiechmann) as summer interns. The internships lasted all summer and for the most part went well for the students.
A month ago I received contact from Encore, and again they wanted to come visit our students. I knew they were hoping to hire 2 or 3 of the summer interns. So, Encore presented to sophs and frosh this past Thursday. After the presentations, I was visiting Jeff Thompson, Vice President of Encore Electric when he handed me a check for $2000. He said "We always visit several colleges, and we give donations to some colleges, but we've never given this much money. Credit your 5 interns this past summer." Of course I was thrilled to hear him say that! That afternoon Encore interviewed approximately 20 freshmen and a handful of sophomores. I think one of the sophomores is going to take a full time job and I have no doubt several of our freshmen will again intern in Colorado this summer.
